Whalers season concludes in Cape Breton

2013-03-05

In the face of stiff oppostition the Major Bantam Whalers played their best game of the season when all the chips were on the line...

Saturday evening in North Sydney fans were treated to an intense, exciting playoff game where all the chips were on the line.  For the Whalers, it was a "must win" to extend their playoff series to a final game 3. For the Breton Sports Cougars it was a chance to wrap things up and head to Provincials.

Armed with a game plan to shut down Cape Breton's potent offense and play 5 on 5 hockey as much as possible the Major Bantam Whalers embarked on what would be one of the most exciting, intense games of the season.

The first period ended in a 0-0 tie with the Whalers taking only one minor penalty the game plan laid out by the coaching staff was being executed by the players to perfection.

The second period saw the Whalers jump out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Quinn MacDonald (assists to Ben MacQueen and Michael Smith) and Andrew Martell (assists to Patrick Halpin and Zakk McKenna), and players headed off to the dressing room with a lead over Breton Sports Cougars for the first time this season.

The third period saw the Breton Sports Cougars outshoot the Whalers 10-5, and ultimately get three pucks past Reid Beck, and at 17:32 of the 3rd take the lead for the first time of the evening.

The game ended 3-2, with the Breton Sports Cougars advancing to Provincials.  It was a fantastic effort by the Major Bantam Whalers, who demonstrated a character team will always have an opportunity to win, no matter who the opposition is.

The Major Bantam Whalers would like to thank their parents, sponsors and fans for all your support this season.
